A
Book Review

Team
Tactics in Bridge by Steve Bruno, 2008, PDI Bridge Supplies,
Abbotsford, BC, Canada
A bridge book is not good because
it is written by a famous author. A bridge book is good because it
explains concepts missing in other books, in a way that is
understandable to dogmeat bridge players like me. "Team
Tactics in Bridge" by my fellow Arizonan Steve Bruno meets my
definition of a good bridge book.
Although I'm a published
author of bridge books, I am not a pro -- far from it. I'm a
student and a proud "Sponsor" of bridge pros, which
means I pay them to play with me. I consider it an honor and a
smart thing to do with some extra bucks when I have them. My game
gets better, even if they doubt it!
Steve Bruno is one of
my pros. I first played with him in Reno when he was an unpaid
member of my pro team (I paid the pro, he recruited four friends,
Steve being one of them). We finished first in the Flight A Swiss
Teams, my first Flight A regional team win. Later I hired Steve to
partner me in pairs, with good results, but that's not why I like
him. I like him because he is likable, and a wonderful, steady
teacher at the table. His book reflects that quality.
This
is a insightful look at how to approach a team game in contract
bridge. In it Bruno covers all forms of team games, from all
standpoints (we are dogmeat, they are dogmeat, we are equals). In
addition, he offers some guidance about perfecting your major suit
raise bidding techniques if you play 2/1, and I think they will
work well in Standard (SAYC) as well. I'm proud to own this book
and consider it a “must have” for all tournament players.
